FAQs

Class 4 MOT questions

Is my van Class 4 or Class 7?
It depends on the van’s design gross weight, not its size. Up to 3,000kg is Class 4; over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg is Class 7. The figure is on the manufacturer’s plate (often inside the driver’s door frame or under the bonnet) and on your V5C logbook as the maximum permissible mass. When you enter your reg, we offer the test your vehicle’s record says it needs.
My minibus has 9 to 12 passenger seats — which class is it?
Class 4. With 13 or more passenger seats it needs a Class 5 MOT.
When is my first MOT due?
Most cars and vans need their first MOT by the third anniversary of their registration, then one every year. Taxis, ambulances and minibuses with 9 to 12 passenger seats need one from a year old.
How early can I get my MOT done?
Up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out — and you keep the same renewal date. Not sure when yours is due? Use our free MOT check.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
You’ll get a refusal of an MOT certificate listing each defect, and we’ll talk you through them. You can drive the vehicle away only if your old MOT is still valid and nothing was marked ‘dangerous’ — otherwise it needs repairing first. Retests are charged in line with the DVSA’s rules, and we’ll tell you the cost before any retest.
What if I disagree with the result?
Talk to us first — we’ll go through it with you. You can also appeal to the DVSA within 14 working days of the test.
