The test

What’s checked

Every test follows the DVSA’s MOT inspection manual for the vehicle’s class, and the result goes straight onto the DVSA’s MOT record. On top of the usual checks, a Class 5 test looks at what matters in a passenger vehicle — its seats, exits, steps and gangways.

  • Brakes
  • Steering and suspension
  • Tyres, wheels and axles
  • Lights, reflectors and electrics
  • Seatbelts and seats
  • Body, chassis and structure
  • Windscreen, wipers, washers and mirrors
  • Exhaust, emissions and fuel system
  • Horn, registration plates and VIN

FAQs

Class 5 MOT questions

My minibus has 9 to 12 passenger seats — do I need Class 5?
No — a minibus with 9 to 12 passenger seats takes a Class 4 MOT. Class 5 is for 13 or more passenger seats.
Can I book a heavier passenger vehicle online?
Online booking covers minibuses up to 5,000kg. For anything heavier, call us on 01425 687202 to check we can test it and book a time.
When is a minibus's first MOT due?
A passenger vehicle with more than 8 passenger seats needs its first MOT a year after it was first registered, then one every year.
How early can I get my MOT done?
Up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out — and you keep the same renewal date. Not sure when yours is due? Use our free MOT check.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
You’ll get a refusal of an MOT certificate listing each defect, and we’ll talk you through them. You can drive the vehicle away only if your old MOT is still valid and nothing was marked ‘dangerous’ — otherwise it needs repairing first. Retests are charged in line with the DVSA’s rules, and we’ll tell you the cost before any retest.
What if I disagree with the result?
Talk to us first — we’ll go through it with you. You can also appeal to the DVSA within 14 working days of the test.
